Copper Pipe Brown Coating

Brown or green coating on copper pipes is called patina and is actually a protective layer of copper oxide. It does not indicate pipe failure. However if pipes show pitting pinhole leaks or heavy green deposits active corrosion may be occurring. Causes include acidic water high mineral content and electrolysis from mixed metals. A water test determines if your water chemistry is aggressive to copper. Water treatment or installing dielectric unions between different metals helps.
