Turn off a gas water heater by rotating the gas control knob to the off position on the front of the unit. This stops gas flow to both the burner and pilot light. For the water supply close the cold water valve on top of the heater. If you smell gas leave immediately and call your gas company. During vacations set the control to pilot mode instead of off to prevent relighting issues upon return.
