Shut off hot water by closing the valve on the hot water outlet pipe at the top of your water heater. This is typically a gate or ball valve on the pipe exiting the heater. Closing this valve stops hot water flow to all fixtures while cold water remains available. You may also need to turn off the water heater itself to prevent overheating. Individual fixture hot water can be shut off at the supply valve under the sink.
