Why Water Heater Making Noise

Water heater noises like popping rumbling or banging typically indicate sediment buildup on the tank bottom. Minerals in hard water settle and harden creating a layer that traps water beneath it causing steam bubbles. Flush the tank by connecting a hose to the drain valve and running water until clear. Crackling sounds in electric heaters mean elements have sediment coating. A high-pitched whine may indicate a partially closed valve restricting water flow.
